Alabama 1
In the 1950s and 1960s 
the rest of the country 
watched Alabama closely.
During these decades Martin Luther King Jr. and other people
led civil rights protest in Alabama. These protest helped 
bring an end to racial segregation
across the country. Like 
other states in the South Alabama was 
once a land of the prosperous cotton plantation and the state fought on the Confederate side in the Civil War. Many Alabamians have jobs in manufacturing. Iron and steel are significant products
. Farmer still raise  cotton, however,  

livestock and dairy products are
more important today.
