Some plants produce chemicals known as alkaided. People have long used alkaloid as medicines. The thick liquid inside the unopened seed capsules of opium poppies contains the alkaloid morphine and codeine. Both alkaloids are strong pain relievers. Codeine also controls coughing. Today medicines usually contain manufactured or synthetic versions of these alkaloids.
