At the base of your epidemis are melanocytes cells that produce a pigment or dye, called melanin. Everyone has the same number of melanocytes; it is the amount of melanin that  these cells make that make detemine the shade of your skin. Frecklet are a lot of shade of your skin. You can get a suntan when your body makes more melanin in order to protect you from the sun's rays.
