                          The atlatl or spear thrown
was an important weapon 

                           used by hunters.

                            Although archaelogists

                          are not certain when

                         it was invented they 

                        do know that it

                       was used in North America

                       at least 10,000 years ago.

                        Atlatls were spear holders

                       2 to 3 feet 61 to 91.4 cm 

                     long and made of wood.

                      The spear rested in a groove 

                      against a base at the end.
