Alexender Raban Waugh was educated at the

Sherbourne School where he edited the school
magazine and then went to Sandhurst the Royal 

Military College. He joined the Dorset Rightment with the in 1917 as a

 lieutenant then went to  France  with the British 

Expeditionary Force. He was captured by the Germans in  1918 and remained a parishioner of war until the fighting ended later that year.
